Lower Heidelberg church to hold Picnic in the Grove [Religion Digest]

• St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, 591 N. Church Road, Lower Heidelberg Township, will hold its Summer Picnic in the Grove next Saturday from 4-8 p.m., with entertainment by the Ringgold Band. Admission is free. Food, drinks, desserts and ice cream will be available for purchase. Bring a lawn chair.

• St. John’s Gernant’s Church (A Federated Congregation), 13 Gernant’s Church Road, Ontelanuee Township, will worship Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Memorial Hall. A special solo, “Amazing Grace,” will be performed by Connie Werley. Starting on Sunday, the church will be celebrating Christmas in July, collecting new, unused, unwrapped items for Bethany Children’s Home in Heidelberg Township. Items will be collected through July and be blessed at a special service on July 28.

• Reformation Lutheran Church, 3670 Perkiomen Ave., Exeter Township, continues the celebration of its 75th anniversary with the return of two sons of the congregation, the Rev. William Shafer and the Rev. Kristian (K.C.) Kohler on Sunday. Shafer grew up at Reformation in the 1950s and retired from active ministry in 2009. Kohler grew up at Reformation more recently and is a doctoral candidate at Boston University. Kohler will preach at the 9:30 a.m. worship service. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the service.

• Calvary United Church of Christ, 640 Centre Ave., Reading, will feature vocalist Kathi Fry, mezzo soprano, at its 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

• Christ Lutheran Church, 222 Niantic Road, Douglass Township, Montgomery County, will hold Coffee and Conversation in the Welcome Center on Sunday at 8:30 and 10 a.m.

• St. John's Lutheran Church, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, will offer a free drive-through takeout meal today from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

• United Church of Christ of Robesonia, 301 W. Penn Ave., will dedicate a PLARN mat to be used by a homeless person and 100 blankets that Church World Service will distribute worldwide during its 10:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The Walking Group meets this morning at 8:30 at the walking trails on the campus of Wernersville State Hospital, Sportsman Road and Route 422, South Heidelberg Township. The Addiction and Recover in Faith Group meets on Monday at 7 p.m. at 4326 W. Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. Call 610-413-4159 to connect. Season One videos from “The Chosen” will be shown and discussed in Miller Fellowship Hall for eight Wednesdays, beginning July 8, from 6-8 p.m. The Women's Lunch will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Country Fare Restaurant, 498 E. Lincoln Ave., Myerstown, Lebanon County. Call 610-659-2775 to reserve a seat. The Men's Fellowship Group will meet next Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Heidelberg Family Restaurant, 910 W. Penn Ave., Heidelberg Township.

• The Explorers Bible study and discussion group will meet in the fellowship hall at Calvary United Church of Christ, 1231 Route 100, Washington Township, after the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The topic will be “The Fruits of the Spirit.”

• Pastor Vaughn Starr will hold a meet and greet at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at Zion's Spies Evangelical Reformed Church, 318 Spies Church Road, Alsace Township. Linda Wilson will provide special music, “Fires,” during the 10:30 worship service. There will be a flea market/bake sale next Saturday from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served (egg sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and baked goods.) A flea market stand costs $10. • Friedens United Church of Christ, 337 Main St., Oley, will worship at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday with a blessing being given to seven church members who are part of the mission team leaving to work with the international arm of Habitat for Humanity. Bonnie Levan will be the guest organist.

• The Rev. Barry Spatz will be the guest preacher for the 9:30 a.m. worship service at Salem Lutheran Church, 8410 Lancaster Ave., Bethel Township, on Sunday.

• Dr. David Hauk will be the guest pastor for the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday at Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 170 Tuckerton Road, Muhlenberg Township. Charlene Brown will provide special music.

In order to have an event listed in the religion digest, it must be something that is not just a regular worship service. This includes things such as guest musicians or vocalists who are not members of the church choir; guest speakers; flea markets and other sales; meals, etc. Send information to life@readingnews.us.
