A pedestrian accident late Thursday afternoon near the Wyomissing post office claimed the life of a 79-year-old borough man, police said Friday.
Richard Weiherer was pronounced dead Thursday evening by a staff physician in Reading Hospital more than two hours after he was struck by a vehicle in the 1000 block of Penn Avenue about 5:20 p.m., according to the Berks County coroner’s office.
Weiherer died of multiple injuries and the death was ruled accidental, officials said.
Wyomissing police said the driver who struck Weiherer remained at the scene.
The 1000 block was closed for an extensive period while the Berks County district attorney’s crash reconstruction team investigated.
Accident details were not immediately available.
Weiherer was the first person to die this year as a result of crashes on Berks roads.
The investigation is ongoing.
