A Reading man is in Berks County Prison after large quantities of cocaine and marijuana, some packaged for sale, were discovered during a check of his home from Berks County Adult Probation/Parole officers, authorities said.
Nicholas S. Vazquez, 32, was taken into custody from his home in the 1200 block of North 10th Street by Reading police who responded to a call from one of the probation officers, they said.
According to court records:
The probation officers found Vazquez in a second-floor bedroom where he was staying. They found a small amount of burnt marijuana, giving them authority to search the room.
During that search they discovered large quantities of illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and measuring and packaging materials commonly used in the drug trade.
Police arrived and were shown a duffle bag found in the room’s closet. In it was a total of nearly 2 pounds of marijuana, some packaged for street sale.
There was also a sneaker box in the bag that contained a bulk quantity of cocaine along with cash totaling $1,000. The cocaine weighed 35 grams, or about 1.2 ounces.
In a drawer within the closet was a paper bag that contained a pistol.
Vazquez is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a drug-trafficking conviction.
Vazquez was charged with two counts each possessing and intending to deliver a controlled substance and possessing and intending to use drug paraphernalia, as well as a single count of possessing a firearm while prohibited.
After arraignment Tuesday night before District Judge Michael D. Kaufman in Reading Central Court, Vazquez was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail to await a hearing.
